David Mulligan

Owner

Meet the New Owner of Max Muscle in San Rafael: David Mulligan

David Mulligan is a lifelong athlete. He is also an entrepreneur who started and built up a thriving local construction business. He plans to operate Max Muscle the same way, one satisfied client at a time.

David grew up in between Denver Colorado, and Danville, California, where from early childhood he played every organized sport available—football, track, basketball, baseball, swimming, wrestling, hockey, and lacrosse—and was also an avid skier. He was heading for a career in football when a serious neck injury during a game stopped him in his tracks and completely changed his life.

Although his neck was broken he suffered no paralysis, and he fought his way back from the injury with months of rehab and physical therapy. He was told that from now on, contact sports and skiing were too much of a risk, and he could never engage in them again.

What do you do when what you love most in life is forbidden to you? For David, it was a question of finding something else he loved. He took a job in San Francisco where the weather was warmer and the real estate market was booming. David soon became a Property Manager while studying for, and quickly obtaining, a real estate license.

Although he could no longer play sports, he continued a focus on fitness and health. He took up mountain biking and rock climbing, and spent lots of time working out in the gym. On an extended trip to Europe, while modeling and traveling, he weaned himself off of American classic foods and introduced himself to the concept of eating fresh caught fish, and in-season fruits and vegetables.

As a child he had done carpentry work with his father, and in school he had taken years of classes in wood shop. He found that after eight years as a property manager he was doing more and more construction work.

He opened his construction company, Builders of Marin (www.buildersofmarin.com), in San Rafael, California in 1999. Working with homeowners on home improvement projects, he focuses on one project at a time and makes sure that each one is completed on time, within budget and with the highest quality craftsmanship. He builds a relationship with each client, built on satisfaction with a job done well. A long list of testimonials on his website attests to his success.

When a Max Muscle store opened in San Rafael nearly three years ago, “I started shopping there immediately because of the high quality of its products,” David says. “When the opportunity came to buy the business, I jumped at it because of how good the products are. I believe in these products.”

David is married to Shannon, who owns Marin Tutors and is also an avid athlete, playing both tennis and soccer. They are blessed with one daughter who has taken to swimming. They have been San Rafael residents since 2000. Together they live the healthy and fit lifestyle, incorporating nutrition, strength training and cardiovascular exercise into their daily lives!

“I’m excited to own another local business in downtown San Rafael,” he says. “This is not only a good business opportunity, but it’s also a lifestyle I’ve led all my life and I’m trying to instill in my daughter. I’ve been dedicated to health, nutrition and fitness my whole life. Now I can share this dedication with clients, through Max Muscle, as I’ve always said, fitness is 80% nutrition!”
